Cupertino, California is Podcasting

Posted by michaelshawnlane on November 7, 2006

Cupertino, California is adding video podcasts to it on-demand webcasting service.  This will allow citizens to listen/view public record of agendas, minutes and staff reports.

“It is our goal to continue to use technology, like that offered by Granicus, to improve city communication with residents,” said Cupertino City Manager David Knapp. “Increasingly, there is a need to deliver municipal information through a medium that is both effective and convenient.”  The podcasts contain webcasts if city council, planning and parks and recreation meetings.

This is certainly a great idea and it is nice to see a city using technology that will help keep the citizens informed on what is happening in there city.

Convert That Blog/RSS Feed Into An MP3

Posted by michaelshawnlane on October 24, 2006

For those of you who are tired of reading your favorite blog or RSS feed now using Odiogo software it will turn that feed into an MP3.  Odiogo downloads your favorite blog feeds or RSS news and converts the text into an MP3 file that you can listen via an MP3 player.

In three easy steps it will convert your favorite blog feeds or RSS news.  First you select the feed.  Then you click refresh to download the feeds and then Odiogo converts them into an MP3 file.  The last step you drop the file onto your MP3 player.

The cost of the software is $29.99, with a 15 day money back guarantee.  The software works on Windows XP or Windows 2000, sorry Mac users.

I listened to the samples on there website.  The software does a really good job of converting the text to speech.  The voice quality is relatively good.  It does sound robotic at times.  Over-all if you are looking for a software package to convert your favorite blog feeds or RSS news so that you can listen to them.  Odiogo might be what you need.

Make Sure You Edit Your Podcast…..Right CNET?

Posted by michaelshawnlane on October 6, 2006

For those of you who listen to Buzz Out Loud Podcast, CNET’s “podcast of indeterminate length” got a little surprise this week on Wednesday October 4, 2006. In my drive home from work I was listening to the podcast and on this day the topics and the way they were talking seemed different. The podcast features Tom, Molly, and producer Veronica. This daily Podcast discusses the latest technology news. As I listened to the podcast the topics didn’t seem really technology related and some of the things seemed inappropriate for certain listeners to hear. I was surprised at what I heard and even the “F” word was dropped. Glad my four year old son was not in the car. This went on for a little over five minutes and then they started the show like they always do, with an introduction from Tom, Molly, and Veronica.

So what happened? Well it appears that Veronica forgot to edit that part out of the podcast before uploading it up to be downloaded. On the next podcast for October 5, 2006 Veronica apologized and felt really bad about what had happened. I am not writing this to come down on CNET’s Buzz Out Loud Podcast; it is a great daily podcast. We all make mistakes. I think it is important to note as podcasts become more main stream and companies continue to invest there advertising dollars into podcasts. You must be careful in editing your podcasts before allowing it to be downloaded. One slip up could have you loosing your advertising dollars.

This is certainly a lesson for anyone who podcasts or is thinking about podcasting. Be sure to edit and make sure you know what you are uploading before your listeners download your podcast.
